Earth is gender-neutral.
The planet has both female and male organisms and even asexual ones. In order to prevent representing only one gender, which is a bit inaccurate, Earth is made neutral and can be switched into anything depending on what the readers prefer.

Yeah, that image is going viral. Earth regrets nothing, poor Mars.
Curiosity have made similar tracks, so is Opportunity. The viral image is made by the now inactive rover Spirit, though. :D
